Roller and Solar Shades

Clean lines, intelligent light control, and a view worth keeping.

Roller and solar shades are among the most versatile and quietly sophisticated window treatments available. Their appeal is in their simplicity, a single panel of carefully chosen fabric that rolls cleanly out of sight when raised, and provides precise light control when lowered. No folds, no layers, no visual complexity. Just a clean line and a beautifully filtered view.

What sets solar shades apart from standard roller shades is the fabric itself. Solar shade fabric is specifically engineered to filter UV rays and reduce glare while preserving your view to the outside, even when the shade is fully lowered. In a city with as much sun as New Orleans, that combination of protection and transparency is genuinely valuable.

Like our cellular shades, roller and solar shades are sourced from trusted vendors and sized, selected, and installed by me personally. My role is to make sure the fabric, the opacity, and the operating system are right for your specific windows and the way you use each room.

What Makes Solar Shades Different

Standard roller shades are made from solid fabric, opaque or semi-opaque materials that control light and privacy in the way most people expect a window shade to work. Solar shades take a different approach.

Solar shade fabric is woven from coated fibers with small openings, measured as an “openness factor”, that allow you to see out while significantly reducing the amount of heat and UV radiation that passes through. The result is a shade that manages the sun’s intensity without cutting you off from natural light or the view beyond your window.

This makes solar shades particularly well suited to New Orleans homes, where protecting furniture, flooring, and artwork from UV fading is a real concern, and where the goal is often to manage intense sunlight rather than eliminate it entirely.

Opacity Options

I offer two opacity levels for roller and solar shades. The right choice depends on the room’s exposure, how much privacy you need, and whether preserving your view is a priority:

Light Filtering

Light filtering solar shades allow diffused natural light into the room while reducing glare and blocking a significant portion of UV radiation. The fabric is woven openly enough that you retain a soft, filtered view to the outside during the day, making this the ideal choice for living rooms, dining rooms, home offices, and any space where you want the benefits of sunlight without its harshest effects.

Light filtering shades are also the most effective choice for glare reduction on screens and televisions. If afternoon sun makes your living room unwatchable or turns your home office into a squinting contest, a well-chosen light filtering solar shade solves that problem elegantly.

Room Darkening

Room darkening shades use a denser fabric that blocks significantly more light than a standard light filtering option. They reduce incoming light to a dim, ambient level, enough to make a room feel calm and shaded without eliminating daylight entirely. This is a strong choice for bedrooms where you want meaningful light control without full blackout, or for spaces that receive intense direct sun for extended periods of the day.

Room darkening is also a practical middle ground for clients who want privacy during daylight hours. The denser weave makes it significantly harder to see in from the outside, while still allowing a softened level of natural light through.

Operating Systems

Roller and solar shades are available in three operating systems. Each has its own strengths, and the right choice depends on the window size, location, and how often you’ll be raising and lowering the shade:

Cordless Lift

Cordless roller shades are operated by gently pulling down on the bottom rail to lower and pushing up to raise, no cords, no chains. The result is a clean, uncluttered window with no hardware visible on either side of the shade. Cordless operation suits the minimal, streamlined aesthetic of roller shades perfectly, and is the safest option for homes with young children or pets. For most standard-sized windows at an accessible height, this is a strong default choice.

Clutch Control

Clutch control shades operate via a looped chain on one side of the shade. Pulling one side of the chain raises the shade; pulling the other lowers it. The clutch mechanism locks the shade precisely in place at any height, giving you consistent, reliable control over exactly how much of the window is covered. This is a particularly practical system for larger or heavier shades where the weight of the fabric makes cordless lift less effortless, and for windows that are used throughout the day and adjusted frequently.

Motorized

Motorized roller shades offer push-button convenience, operated by remote, wall switch, or smart home integration depending on the system. This is the premium option and the one that makes the most meaningful difference in rooms with large windows, hard-to-reach windows, or multiple shades that benefit from being controlled simultaneously. In a sun-drenched New Orleans living room with four west-facing windows, being able to lower all four shades with a single button at 3pm is not a luxury, it’s a quality-of-life decision. Motorization also integrates beautifully with automated home systems for clients who want scheduled or sensor-controlled operation.

Roller & Solar Shades Are a Great Fit If…

  • You want a clean, minimal treatment that doesn’t compete with other design elements in the room
  • Glare on screens, televisions, or work surfaces is a daily frustration you want solved
  • You have a view you love and don’t want to sacrifice it for light control
  • UV protection for furniture, flooring, or artwork is a priority
  • You’re dealing with intense afternoon sun in a west-facing room
  • You want a treatment that pairs beautifully with drapery panels as a functional underlayer
  • You’re looking for a low-maintenance, durable option that holds up well in high-use rooms

Layering with Drapery

Solar shades are one of the most popular underlayer treatments for custom drapery, and for good reason. The shade handles the functional work: UV protection, glare reduction, and daytime privacy. The drapery panels handle the design work: softness, texture, color, and the finished, elevated look that defines a well-appointed room.

Together, the two layers give you a treatment that is both beautifully dressed and genuinely practical, one of the best combinations in window treatment design. If you’re considering solar shades for a room where you also want drapery, I’ll help you think through how the layers work together so the result feels intentional from every angle.

How It Works

Every roller and solar shade project begins with an in-home consultation. I come to your space, assess the windows and the light conditions throughout the day, and help you select the right fabric opacity and operating system for each room. I handle the measurement and ordering personally, so the shades arrive sized correctly and install cleanly from the start.

No guesswork, no returns, no frustration. Just the right shade for your windows, done right the first time.
