Austrian Shades

The Austrian Shade is an elaborate shade that reflects an image of an affluent sumptuousness of a luxury European home. Austrian shades have been around for many decades and were once common in mansions and luxury homes. While the Austrian shade appears complex and intricate, they can immediately make an impact on any window. When raised, the fabric moves upward in deep scallops. Similar to balloon shades, Austrian shades can be elevated on cords into swags and when let down, gather into an elegant scallop.

Even though Austrian shades are typically made from sheer fabrics, this is not a rule. One can select from any number of medium to heavy fabrics to make this graceful drape.

Austrian shades appear full both in length and in width. While one may utilize any type of top bearing, pencil pleats are the most common. The shade can be raised and lowered by cords running through rings sewn onto the posterior aspect of the shade. When fully dropped, Austrian shades appear like a regular curtain, but much more attractive. To make the Austrian shade more elegant, the lower edge can be decorated with trimmings like tassels, lace or beads. To make the drape even more picture-some, one may try to add a different size scallops on different windows.

Like many other drapes, the Austrian shade looks both neat and tidy when dropped or pulled up. The Austrian drape can be very stunning with its swag affect and always appear formal, even if it is not decorated.
